"Come follow me and I will make you fishers
of men!" With these words I felt the call of Jesus at nineteen years of age.
I noticed early on though that following Jesus did not just mean going to church. The
Jesus of the Gospels did not live in a cathedral surrounded by candle stickson the
contrary he left the 99 in the open country and went out and searched for the lost until
He found them (Luke 15:1-7). He said, "I have come to seek and to save that which was
lost." And so He walked the dusty roads and marketplaces of Galilee and engaged
people right where they lived and spoke to them about the Kingdom of God. Some of His
closest friends were dishonest businessmen, prostitutes, and drunkards. He was called a
"friend of sinners" and the common people heard him gladly.
I knew that despite my shy and introverted nature Jesus was calling me
to follow Him into this style of ministry. From tiny isolated villages in developing
nations to some of the worlds great cities, wherever people gather to exchange
ideas, I have stood and talked about the person of Jesus. I have spoken to countless
thousands of people "outside the walls" of the church, and had the priceless
privilege of praying with a great many making first time professions of faith in the
sinless, gentle carpenter from Nazareth! To this day the words of the Apostle Paul still
ring in my heart, How can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And
how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they
are sent? Romans 10:14 &15
I have been saved since 1979 and I believe I can count on my fingers
the times I have missed church. So I absolutely believe in being committed to the local
church. However, I do not believe that is where it stops. Jesus has compelled us to reach
a lost world "outside the walls" of our churches. So, if we are truly His
followers, we will go with Him out into a dying world and proclaim His message.
And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate
to make the people holy through His own blood. Let us, then, go to Him outside the camp,
bearing the disgrace He bore (Heb. 13:12-13).
The heart of Jesus is to seek and save the lost! The Bible says that is
why He came into the world. However, I believe for many churches and individual Christians
"evangelism" is a monumental struggle. I have spent the last twenty years
speaking face to face with lost people in twenty countries. I truly believe the root of
most Christians struggle is that they have never been preparedso they simply
feel they dont know what to say to an unsaved person. Peter said, Always be
prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that
you have (I Peter 3:15).
One of the great passions of my heart is to help equip local
churches on how to share their faith. Then together we can make heaven rejoice. If you
would like to contact us to do a revival or seminar we would welcome the opportunity to
serve you.
